COMPASS

The writer of this page is Boniface Sewe, one of the staff  at Hopewell School.

Project Description

The overall goal of the program is to rent an office and three other rooms, to cater for an estimated two hundred youth men and women, ranging in age from 16 to 26, acquire office furniture and machines to help boost the work of the staff and to enhance the process of teaching and learning, to acquire utensils and stoves so that Compass can cook for these youths during  sessions, to purchase stationery and text books for various subjects that Compass teaches, and to help teachers meet their traveling allowance. This would enhance the process of teaching and learning and subsequently lead to quality performance.

Introduction

Compass is a charitable education centre providing training and skills to the youth who are currently not enrolled in schools.  Some of these youths dropped out of school or could not pursue secondary education for one reason or another.  Most of them are now over 18 years and feel embarrassed to be readmitted in an ordinary school;  yet they want to improve their human capital in order to fit into the labor market. This program targets the youths of Nakuru especially those from slum areas and other hardship areas of Nakuru.  The program was established in April last year(2006).

Compass has a management of nine(9) steering committee members with Boniface as the coordinator. Compass has eight(8) teachers who work on voluntary basis.

Problem statement

At present the process of teaching and learning at Compass is conducted in various places of Nakuru depending on if our request to use the facility is granted. In most cases, Compass conducts its activities in the open in order to disseminate the information to the youth. This situation greatly compromises quality learning especially in hot weather due to intense heat and rainy seasons. The security of the teachers’ and students’ properties is also compromised since Compass does not have a residence of its own to keep and secure property.

Our objective is to solicit a monthly rent of $ 480 per month to enable Compass rent an office and other three rooms, so that these needy youths can access learning in condusive rooms.

Specific Program Objectives

(a)    Improving learning atmosphere, which will subsequently be reflected in improved performance

(b)   Improving security of both teachers and students property

(c)    Supplement other organizations’ efforts in providing relevant education to the youth

Target

The office is proposed to enable Compass carry out its activities effectively.  The classes are proposed to  assist the needy youth access relevant education and training skills.  The furniture and machines will assist in ensuring efficient learning process

Sustainability

In order to ensure adequate implementation and sustainability, a number of sustainability mechanisms have been installed. These range from both technical and logistical resources to sieve and ring fence (to identify the problems and find a solution the those problems) all aspects deemed to deter the centre’s efficient performance

Long term Sustainability mechanism already put in place is;

The organization management committee has been instituted and mandated purposely to oversee the smooth running of the program.

Compass therefore need the items and resources listed on the Needs Page in order to assist our youth.  Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
