Year end-2010

Harrison Agonda- Runs Children’s Charity Center -Homa Bay -3,150.00 This went for school supplies, security gate, furniture for orphanage, building repairs, seed money, trees, chickens, operational license, etc. Harrison and his wife run this and the orphanage has about 30 children now. The school has over 200. I receive very few pictures and I know its difficult as Harrison needs to travel to get to a cyber-he has promised pics and receipts of the furnishings, chicken project and buildings he has been working on. Last year we dug the well and began building projects.

Nelly’s orphanage-4,990.00 Soar paid salary’s for the first 8 months. Bought beds and tables ,etc. put in a orchard and gardens, paid for food and medical. The needs are huge here and Chris Dupre , The Werner’s have contributed to the house rent, electric bills, etc. Nelly does not have permanent sponsors and this will be a struggle for her to maintain. She has 20 children now. Nelly followed her dream and sponsors are needed. She is doing a tremendous service. If any group would like to help by providing funds, ordering uniforms for the older children, just let us know. Thanks

Freedom for girls-1,030.00 This is Patricia Werners project. I believe truly that this project is the most important of all. It keeps the girls in school and that will change their future and the future of the country. Pat works with HEART and the Lions Club along with Rotary to implement this successful project. It keeps growing!!! Why not?? 5.00 supplies one girl for one year with pads and underpants. I do not think there is a better value in the world! It is a very important project and Soar wants to be able to increase their contribution to Pat each year. Pat began with supplying one school and I believe this project now supplies over 40 schools.

Raphael 250.00- A Catholic priest that spoke at St. John’s Church a couple of years ago. The Council of Catholic Women of Verona contributed to help him provide school supplies.

Kitchen at Hopewell Highschool 490.00- This is a project Ruth and Steve Gibbs hope to see to completion. The ground was bought and the foundation raised but we haven’t seen any progress since. We are hoping that a more practical top can be added to get this to a usable state. Over 500 students attend Hopewell and a decent kitchen would be an awesome asset.

Raphael-50.00 2 of his paintings sold and money went directly to him.

Stamps,registration,domain name,web site charge,paper- 156.00

T-Shirts for first Soar walk/run- 350.00

Saba- Local lady in Mt. Horeb’s daughter runs this school- 200.00 donated for supplies

Calvins school and Anthony’s rent-800.00 Funded by Aileen Fitzgerald- This is included in James money as he gets it to the correct places.

James 10,680.00- James is basically Soar’s project manager. The money went to the following. Land purchase,chicken project,waterline project,teachers wages,the burnt lady,orphan baby,handicapped man,uniforms,community garden,uniforms,school fees,first loan to open a store,school fees,test fees,pipeline to fish pond,office supplies to print school books, a printer,internet,sewing project,wages,tree nursery,seed money,repair roofs and gutters,etc.

Overall 19,850.00 was sent out to our friends in Kenya for support, sponsorship, education and development in 2010.

Thankyou

Look at the beautiful Uniforms Susan made.

The uniforms made by Susan are outstanding. Susan made over 60 uniforms and Soar sent these children on their way to school paying the fees for each.It was the first opportunity for many of them to be able to have a uniform to go to school. I wish we could afford the 4.00 per pair for shoes. We are going to work towards sweaters and shoes next year. Some of these little ones walk over 3 miles to get to a school to attend. The teachers are hired Soar just needs the building fixed to begin a school so it is local to this community. A new building is about 10 thousand, that would be a cement block building. Right now we have had the latrine dug by volunteers and are working on the money to cement and build it. The latrine first, then the school. We have the land, water, supplies, furniture, teachers. The next step is building improvements, eventually a new cement block one. The license comes after its opened and inspected. This will be Soar’s biggest project over the next few years. Monicah and Eunice, former preschool teachers at Hopewell will be the instructors. These woman did an outstanding job. School starts at the age of three and these loving teachers are really Moms and educators. It is wonderful that these two teachers are willing to come the distance to help us out. Judy and Dale Merwin’s successful chicken project will enable this school to begin the day with breakfast and I predict there will not be an absent student all year!!

Dedicated to Don’s Mom- Theresa Hoffman

Don’s Mom an avid gardener would have been so happy to see this project done in her honor. James donated land and Soar donated the seed. The poorest people in the community did the work in exchange for the harvest. I believe they got 4 harvests off this land from the cowpeas they planted. The rains were unusally favorable. I know they really worked hard and were happy to have the oppurtunity to grow vegetables for their familes. We hope to duplicate this community garden along with adding drip irrigation to the project. The irrigated fields can produce 4 crops per year.

The start of reforestation

One of the very first projects the Burgeii Environmental Group did was begin seedlings to plant their area in trees. We are now wanting to fence and plant the borders of the 2 acres of land just purchased for this community. We will concentrate on fruit trees along with trees for fuel. The majority of cooking is still done over open fire pits. The fuel used is wood. The one thing I really noticed when in Kenya was how much nicer it was if there were trees in the area. It cut the dust, and cooled the area.Soar has done a number of these projects. Children’s Charity Center in Homa Bay planted. Nelly’s father planted an orchard for the orphanage. Hopewell Highschool planted the perimeter of the school grounds. Don and I also landscaped the nursery when we were there. It is a challenge to keep the roaming livestock away from these plantings. The fencing usually comes first and barbed wire is the most economical fence. The price for the plants is about 1/10th what it is for us to buy here. Fruit trees being the most expensive. The land we purchased has water close by, so will help facilitate keeping the plants alive. Planting should begin in Feb.
