Dedicated to Don’s Mom- Theresa Hoffman

Don’s Mom an avid gardener would have been so happy to see this project done in her honor. James donated land and Soar donated the seed. The poorest people in the community did the work in exchange for the harvest. I believe they got 4 harvests off this land from the cowpeas they planted. The rains were unusally favorable. I know they really worked hard and were happy to have the oppurtunity to grow vegetables for their familes. We hope to duplicate this community garden along with adding drip irrigation to the project. The irrigated fields can produce 4 crops per year.

The start of reforestation

One of the very first projects the Burgeii Environmental Group did was begin seedlings to plant their area in trees. We are now wanting to fence and plant the borders of the 2 acres of land just purchased for this community. We will concentrate on fruit trees along with trees for fuel. The majority of cooking is still done over open fire pits. The fuel used is wood. The one thing I really noticed when in Kenya was how much nicer it was if there were trees in the area. It cut the dust, and cooled the area.Soar has done a number of these projects. Children’s Charity Center in Homa Bay planted. Nelly’s father planted an orchard for the orphanage. Hopewell Highschool planted the perimeter of the school grounds. Don and I also landscaped the nursery when we were there. It is a challenge to keep the roaming livestock away from these plantings. The fencing usually comes first and barbed wire is the most economical fence. The price for the plants is about 1/10th what it is for us to buy here. Fruit trees being the most expensive. The land we purchased has water close by, so will help facilitate keeping the plants alive. Planting should begin in Feb.

Featuring sewing projects and the Freedom for girls project

JoAnne Franzene purchased Susan a sewing machine. Susan immediately began sewing student uniforms and other items for sale. Susan also began teaching other ladies how to sew. She is open for business. If anyone wants to sponsor her to make uniforms for the orphans it cost about 30.00 per uniform. This buys the material, gives her something for doing the work. The sweaters are the most expensive costing about 20.00 each and a pair of shoes is 4.00. To keep the girls going to school during their time of month. The Freedom for girls project is run by Patricia Werner. 5.00 supplies one girl for one year with kotex pads and 4 pair of underpants. Worthwhile projects!!!

Water storage system

Soar has funded the water line project to the Burgeii Community. We have funded the storage tanks for 3 homes and the group managed to save enough to fund 1 more house. There are currently 8 homes that are to far away to receive water from the municipal line and do not have  water storage tanks. The tanks cost 400.00 each. The problem that was noticed with the instillation of the first tanks was that proper roofs and eaves are needed to make these tanks workable. The picture gives a good idea of the system being used by several homes. Realistically about 600.00 US dollars are needed to make these water storage systems workable for each house. This is an ongoing project and who gets the next tanks will not be chosen at random, they will go to the outlying community members.

Building the tilipia pond

We are disappointed that there are not fish to eat yet. The tilipia have remained small and the pond is being drained today to start over. There are several of these tilipia ponds in the area now and one has big fish, the other two the fish have not grown? The concept is a good one. The chicken manure is fed to the fish and the fish water(which needs to be freshened each week) is used to water the adjacent vegetable garden. The fish just did not get big! The water is drained and the fish are going to be taken to Agri and identified so a determination can be made as to why this project has failed. The International Village which started the first Tilipia pond is going to replace the fish with  offspring of theirs and begin this project anew. We wish the Burgeii group luck in trying this project again. It is a learning situation for everyone. The rotary clubs in the Nakuru area are sponsoring many of these Tilipia ponds and we will contact them to check into this situation.

Update on Nelly’s orphanage

Nelly currently has 20 orphans at her orphanage. Little Chris is hopefully coming home today after being hospitalized with malaria and pneumonia. The hospital bill is 23400kes. Nelly continues to have her hands full and is fortunate to have friends and family willing to help. Soar planted an orchard, garden and supplied tables, chairs, bedding and workers salaries for this new found orphanage. Nelly is fulfilling a life long dream to help the orphaned children of her country. Please know that 100% of your donation will go to the project you pick to donate to. Special thanks to Steve and Pat Werner for their generous donation at Christmas to the children in Nelly’s orphanage.

Community project

Soar provided a camera to the Burgeii group as a gift. One of the first projects we did was photograph each family in the community. It was a very special treat for each of the families to receive their photo. One of the projects that came about because of this was an emergency fund to assist community people that are less fortunate then the rest. It is not a huge amount of money, just a few dollars a month that can be given to someone in need . It lets them know Soar’s sponsors care and are helping. The one person we assist monthly is a Grandma left to care for the surviving twin when her daughter and the other twin died during delivery. Soar is providing milk to this Grandma and in several years will pay for his schooling. Little gestures that make a big difference in their lives. Thanks to anyone donating to Soars general fund.
