NATHAN

Age:  21

What do you want to study at school?

I want a diploma in business administration

.Potential to pay for school, can your parents help you?

My mother can’t afford it and my father is dead.

Grade point average at Hopewell

C+  (Nathan came highly recommended by Nelly. Although his grade is not the highest she said he helps out at Hopewell every chance he has and he is a very slight built man who she felt really suffered when doing the hard physical work he has been doing. He also has not lost sight or hope in his goal for continuing education )

Extra curricular activitiesI

like playing soccer. I played in the Hopewell school team and currently I play in a village youth team.

Volunteer work

I offer remedial teaching to Hopewell students who need my help especially in Science subjects in the evening and during weekends.

What school have you been accepted at?

I have been accepted at Tracom College in Nakuru town.

How much does the school cost?

The Diploma course will cost Ksh. 17,700.00 ($265). The first level, that is diploma 1, will take 6 months.

Tell a bit about yourself and why should you receive the scholarship?

I am the fifth born in a family of seven. My mother is the head of our family.  . My father passed away some years ago. We live at Solai Location in Nakuru District as squatters as a result of ethnic clashes some years ago. In return for taking care of the land, the landlord  supports by providing us with some basic needs like food.  Three of my elder brothers and a sister have gone as far as primary  school evel of education and could not proceed due to lack of funds.  My younger brother and a sister are still in primary school, which is free in KenyaAfter the completion of my primary school level of education, I was lucky to join Hopewell High School, which is a charitable school. I proceeded to form four and performed quite well by attaining an aggregate grade of C+.  However, I could not proceed to the tertiary level due to lack of funds. It is now three year since proceeded to form four and performed quite well by attaining an aggregate grade of C+.  I graduated from high school and am still determined and hopeful to push my way forward. I first worked as a boda boda operator- a bicycle ‘taxi’. It was one of the most difficult things I have tried so far. But since I had to survive, I had to do it. After some time, I quit the field and I am currently working in a quarry and the little I make is hardly enough to feed me and the rest of my family and therefore I am left with not a penny to save for my school.   My dream is to proceed with my education. I wish to take a diploma course (and even proceed to university for a degree) in Business Administration so that I can be in a better position to run a charitable initiative like Hopewell High School and hence support the less fortunate in the society. This is the reason as to why I am seeking this scholarship.

MARTIN

Age 21

Why do you want to go to school?

I want to go school to further my education and achieve my dream. When there, I’ll be taking a course entitled: Bsc. Disaster Mitigation and Sustainable Development

Potential to pay for school, can your parents help you?

My parents are not in a position to pay for my school. Both of them are jobless and don’t have any main economic activity or anything of the sort as a source of income. They are peasant farmers who do subsistence farming in our grandmother’s little piece of land, which leaves them with hardly anything left for such like things as sale.

Grade point average at Hopewell:

I attained a mean grade of B+ (missed an A- by a point) under the most difficult conditions

Extra curricular Activities

When I was in school, I held several leadership positions. Among these, I was a House Captain (Victoria and Elgon Houses) / school prefect; I was the organizing secretary and the chairperson of YCS (Young Christian Student) movement. I also headed other clubs: Drama and Journalism besides others. I like spending my time helping the ones in need: the sick in hospitals and at home, the orphaned and the destitute. I also participate in the activities of a local church (St. Joseph The Worker Church) youth group and am in the same church choir. I also hold a leadership role in this group as the Youth Coordinator

Volunteer Work

I, to this day, have been a volunteer as a teaching assistant at Hopewell High School since January, 2006. This was just before I got my final exams [KCSE-Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education] results. I have also done volunteer works at Juvenile Prison, Nakuru; Holy Family Children’s Home, Arap Moi Children’s Home. I have also volunteered on several occasions at Mji Wa Wazee  (Int. The City Of The Elderly)- this is a home (hospice) that takes care of the elderly men and women who have no one to take care of them or are neglected. Others are usually unwell and need extra attention and care.

What school have you been accepted at?

I have already gotten admission at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. This is a public university in western Kenya and based at a place called Kakamega. This is more than 600 kilometers from home (Meru) and about 300 from Nakuru. It was formerly known as Western University College of Science and Technology.

Tell us a little about yourself

fI am a Kenyan male aged 21. I did my KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education) exams in the year 2000. Although I passed well I had to repeat the year due to financial constraints. I passed very well and a friend of my cousin told him about Hopewell (then called Tumaini House School) which could offer secondary education to bright girls and boys like me who hail from financially handicapped families. This is how I joined Hopewell High School in the year 2001. I learned while there until I graduated after having satisfactorily completed my high school course in the year 2005. While there, my welfare  (school fees and catering) was taken care of by the school directors.I passed well and secured a chance in highly competitive public universities. I received my admission this year and am expected to join in the month of August; failure to which my chance will be lost to someone else (probably one with the cash needed!) I don’t have anybody to pay for my school and I don’t know what is going to come out of this whole situation.I am the first to join high school in my family. My elder sister only did her primary level but could not proceed despite the fact that she had passed very well. My other siblings are in school now thanks to the introduction of free primary education by our government recently. The others never even completed the elementary level due to lack of school fees.I am of the Christian faith. I am a hardworking, disciplined, ambitious and a benevolent young man. I hope to change the situation around me and in the general society. I have all along been interested in helping mankind in many ways; and especially the needy in the society. Making this world a better place to live, better than I found it, is my dream goal. I can do this after learning and getting the necessary education. This will help me to carry my duties from a more competent and informed position. Facing challenging situations for a noble cause is a motivation for me to work even harder

How much does the school cost?

The 2007/2008 academic year will cost Ksh. 35,850 ($536). The breakdown is as follows:

Tuition fee, first semester        Ksh 16,800.00 ($251.00)

Tuition fee, second semester  Ksh 10,000 ($150.00)

Library charges per year         Ksh   9,000 ($135.00)

Why should you receive the scholarship?

When I was still in school, I always dreamt of going to the highest level I could so as to be able to make a positive difference in a better and efficient way. I did not know where funds to help me do this would come from; and this has been my worry to this day. By giving me this scholarship, you will be helping a truly needy person realize his dream. You will be helping so many others through me since I have a helping heart and mind in me. You will also be helping me to give back to the society a little of what I have gotten from it (I believe it is too much to be paid back!) in a beautiful kind. For these and more good reasons I kindly and humbly ask you to offer me this scholarship.

would like to advance toa full Nursing course.

About my self and the reasons why i should receive this scholarship:

I am the second born in a family of six.  My parents are small-scale farmers. They grow coffee, which is not well paying. The little they make meets family basic expenses and school fees for my siblings in primary school. My elder sister
works as a casual worker. I studied in primary school (elementary level) for three extra years so that my sister could finish her studies in High School and enable my parents support me through High School. I help my parents in the farm in the
evenings. Other times i sell vegetables and buy books for my younger brothers with the little money I make.  I will be grateful for this scholarship because
without it, I can never make it to a college. I would like to improve my situation, my families and to help the most needy students i left in  HOPEWELL School and also change my community and my county to a better place. This can only be done if and when I graduate from college because in this country, the only way to a nice job and great opportunities in life is through education.
I will appreciate if I am awarded this sponsorship and I promise to work very hard.
